Domani sera, allo STAPLES Center di Los Angeles, l’esibizione di due icone della boxe mondiale. Uno più dell’altro.

È 15 anni che non si vede Mike Tyson sul ring, ha combattuto per 20 anni, totale 56 match, Roy Jones è lontano dal ring dal febbraio 2018, ha combattuto per 29 anni, totale 75 match.

Sono simili in altezza e peso, ma sono stati due immensi campioni molto diversi. Incisivo con il colpo risolutore Tyson, un fulmine versatile, Roy Jones.

Nei maxi schermi delle scommesse, Mike Tyson, 54 anni, è il favorito.

L’ allenatore di Mike Tyson,  è quel ragazzo straordinario, Ben Davison che ha motivato al ritorno sul ring, quel cavallo pazzo, gran talento che è Tyson Fury,  si certo il papà di Fury ha dato il nome al figlio del suo pugile più amato. E questo basta per far credere che il match tra Mike Tyson e Roy Jones, sarà una faccenda seria.

Ciò che a me è chiarissimo è che questi due, un tempo straordinari protagonisti del ring, oggi hanno fame di pubblico. Quella fame che li motiva a tornare sul ring, si chiama voglia di affetto, di essere riconosciuti per ciò che un tempo sono stati: Eroi del Ring.

Non si confrontano con i pugili contemporanei, sarebbe considerato “un ritorno sul ring” e nessuno dei due se lo può permettere. Troppi gli anni e non solo per Mike Tyson ma anche per Roy Jones 52 anni il prossimo gennaio 2021.

Non dovrebbero farsi male in entrambi i casi: Roy Jones, sulla mia carta, è troppo veloce per Mike Tyson. Tyson non mi sembra abbia il fiato per una resistenza lunga tutti gli 8 round previsti, di due minuti ciascuno. Indosseranno anche guantoni più spessi per evitare colpi letali. Ma Roy Jones, non deve mettersi di fronte a Tyson o il match finirà subito…

E non credo ci sarà un finale con Know Out. Non è questo lo spirito di un’esibizione. E le regole della Commissione Atletica della California, sono molto chiare. Se ci sarà un taglio, il match verrà sospeso.  E nessuno dei due, dovranno chiudere con il KO! Voci maliziose, dicono che Tyson non si adatterà alle regole…

I giudici che non saranno presenti a bordo ring, ma da remoto sono iconici, per il WBC ci saranno, Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza, e Chad Dawson,  che daranno i loro punteggi. Il risultato non verrà citato in nessuno dei due sfidanti sul loro record.

Una targa speciale ‘Frontline Battle Belt’ con inciso, ‘Black Lives Matter’, sarà data ad entrambi i  campioni.

Io non credo si andrà oltre uno sparring, una passata di guanti, forse più aggressiva. Nessuno dei due ha l’età per permettersi un match vero.

È comunque è un gran bel regalo, per gli appassionati vedere due leggende, confrontarsi su ciò che di più hanno amato fare nella vita: misurarsi sul ring.

Negli ultimi anni i Pesi Massimi hanno dominato la scena mondiale della Grande Boxe. Manny Pacquaio è l’eccezione che conferma il trend.

Gli USA sono a digiuno di quegli epici gladiatori, grandi neri che han dominato per decenni la scena mondiale.

Poi c’è stata la stagione d’oro dei Fratelli ucraini, i Klitschko, Vitali e Wladimir, e certo  dell’inglese,  Lennox Lewis. Oggi è il turno dei britannici: Tyson Fury e  Anthony Joshua, sono loro che dominano l’attenzione di milioni in TV e di migliaia nelle grandi arene tra gli USA e Regno Unito.

il viaggio più bello, pericoloso, avventuroso e gratificante di tutti è quello dentro te stesso, che tu sia seduto in soggiorno o sotto una tettoia in campagna, e comunque stare a casa e non fare nulla può essere davvero difficile per molti. Figuriamoci per le leggende della grande boxe.

Questi due ragazzi di un tempo fantastico, ormai leggende anche per sé stessi, due grandi fighters, arrivati dove sono arrivati grazie a quello spirito in cui sono pronti a lasciare tutto sul ring.

Infatti entrambi hanno avuto un fine carriera molto sofferto, come si conviene alle grandi icone della Boxe.

E io ben lo conosco quello spirito, mio padre più temerario dei due campioni di domani sera, all’età di 41 anni, dopo aver disputato 98 match sino al 1963;  nel 1972 volle ritornare sul ring, quella nostalgia canaglia lo attanagliava, dunque si rimise in gioco, ma non con l’ultimo brocco o con un suo coetaneo, ma con il campione in ascesa, di 15 anni più giovane, lo spagnolo Jose Manuel Duran. Garbelli venne fermato al 2°round per ferita…ovvio. Terminò così.

Si trattava di quella cosa lì che hanno solo i Fighters nel loro DNA, essere disposti a morire sul ring, dare tutto lì, lasciare tutto sul ring.

E mi vien da sorridere ancora, quando mio vecchio, che alla bella età di 78 anni, nel 2010,  mi chiese di organizzargli un match con un avversario tra i 70 e 75 anni…!!!

L’ho guardato dall’alto in basso per vedere se era serio, lo era. L’ho portato dai ragazzi di San Donato, una palestra alle porte di Milano, e si è messo a fare sparring con i dilettanti e con il maestro della palestra…preciso e potente, ha fatto uno sparring da leggenda quale  è stato, solo con il fiato un po’ corto!

E tra le sue massime filosofiche che ho riportato anche nel mio libro, e che aveva espresso così al grande giornalista Enzo Biagi: “ …avrei voluto morire da eroe sul ring per tutte le noie che la vita riserva dopo….” Io l’ho chiamata nostalgia del ring.

E domani sera tra Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones, si tratta di questo di fame di pubblico, di fame di affetto.

La leggenda del pugilato americano femminile, Christy Martin ha dato il punteggio di 79-73 a favore di Tyson.

Vinny Pazienza che in passato è stato Campione del Mondo in due categorie, ha dato il punteggio di 80-77 a favore di Jones, contro il quale è stato fermato nel 6 ° round del loro incontro per il titolo dei Super Medi nel giugno 1995.

L’ex campione lineare dei Pesi Massimi Leggeri, Chad Dawson, che poteva determinare l’esito nettamente, ha invece dato il punteggio di pari,76-76.

Qualunque cosa accada in futuro, l’unica cosa che nessuno può togliere a queste leggende del ring sono le loro rispettive imprese storiche e, certo ci hanno intrattenuto con “il mestiere”  per un’altra notte.

Entrambi non amano il risultato di “pari”. Ci sarà un’altra notte sul ring per queste leggende ultra cinquantenni…? Mike Tyson ci ha preso gusto…

Tomorrow evening, at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the performance of two icons of world of boxing. One more than the other.

Mike Tyson has not been seen in the ring since 15 years, he fought for 20 years, total 56 fights, Roy Jones has been away from the ring since February 2018, he fought for 29 years, total 75 matches.

They are similar in height and weight, but they were two huge, very different champions. Incisive Tyson, with his solver shot, with versatile skills Roy Jones.

On the big betting screens, Mike Tyson, 54 years old, is the favorite.

Mike Tyson’s trainer, he’s that extraordinary boy, Ben Davison who motivated to return to the ring, that crazy horse, great talent that is Tyson Fury, yes of course Fury’s dad gave the name to the son of his most beloved fighters.  And this is enough to make us believe that the fight between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones will be serious business.

What is very clear to me is that these two, once extraordinary protagonists of the ring, are now hungry for the public. That hunger that motivates them to return to the ring,  is called the desire for affection, to be recognized for what they once were: Heroes of the Ring.

They don’t match with contemporary boxers, it would be considered “a return to the ring” and neither of them can afford it. Too many years and not only for Mike Tyson,  but also for Roy Jones 52 years,  next January 2021.

They shouldn’t get hurt either way: Roy Jones, on my card, is too fast for Mike Tyson. Tyson doesn’t seem to have the breath to endure all 8 rounds, two minutes each. They will also wear thicker gloves to avoid lethal blows. But Roy Jones, he shouldn’t stand in front of  Tyson or the fight will end immediately …

And I don’t think there will be an ending with Know Out. This is not the spirit of a performance. And the California Athletics Commission rules are very clear. If there is a cut, the exhibition  will be suspended. And neither of them will have to close with the KO! Mischievous rumors say Tyson won’t fit the rules …

The judges who will not be present at ringside, but remotely are  also iconic, for the WBC there will be Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza, and Chad Dawson, who will give their scores. The result will not be mentioned in either of the two challengers on their record.

A special ‘Frontline Battle Belt’ plaque engraved with ‘Black Lives Matter’ will be given to both champions.

I don’t think it will go beyond a sparring, a pass of gloves, perhaps more aggressive. Neither of them is old enough to afford a real fight.

However, it is a great gift, for fans to see two legends, matching each other on what they most loved to do in life: confronting in the ring. The Heavy Weights division have dominated the world stage of GreatBoxing in recent years. Manny Pacquaio is the exception that confirms the trend.

The US is starved of those epic gladiators, the great blacks who have dominated the boxing world for decades.

Then there was the golden season of the Ukrainian brothers, the Klitschko, Vitali and Wladimir, and certainly of the Englishman, Lennox Lewis. Today is the turn of the British: Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, they are the ones who dominate the attention of millions on TV and thousands in the big arenas between the US and UK.

The most beautiful, dangerous, adventurous and rewarding journey of all is the one inside yourself, whether you are sitting in the living room or under a canopy in the countryside, and still staying at home and doing nothing can be really difficult for many. Let alone for the legends of great boxing.

These two guys of a fantastic time, now legends also for themselves, two great fighters, arrived where they have arrived thanks to that spirit in which they are ready to leave everything in the ring. In fact, both have had a very difficult career end, as befits the great icons of Boxing.

And I know that spirit well, my father more reckless than the two champions of tomorrow night, at the age of 41 years,  after having  fought 98 matches until 1963; in 1972 he wanted to return to the ring, that rogue nostalgia gripped him, so he got back into the game, but not with the last crook or with a peer of his age, but with the rising champion, 15 years younger, the Spanishman Jose Manuel Duran. Garbelli was stopped in the 2nd round for injury… of course. And that’s was it!

It was about the thing there that only Fighters have in their DNA, being willing to die in the ring, give it all there, leave it all in the ring.

And it makes me smile again, when my old man, who at the beautiful age of 78 years, back in 2010, asked me to organize a fight for him with an opponent between 70 and 75 years … !!!

I looked at him from top to bottom to see if he was serious, he was. I took him to the  San Donato,’s gym outside Milano, and he started sparring with the amateurs and with the gym trainer … precise and powerful, he did a legendary sparring like he was, only with short of breath!

And among his philosophical quotes that I also reported in my book, and which he also expressed to the great journalist Enzo Biagi: “… I would have liked to die as a hero in the ring for all the annoying that life reserves after ….” I called it nostalgia for the ring.

And tomorrow night between Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones, it’s about audience hunger, hunger for affection.

UPDATE November 29th,2020

American women’s boxing legend Christy Martin gave the score 79-73 in favor of Tyson.

Vinny Pazienza, who was formerly World Champion in two divisions, gave the score 80-77 in favor of Jones, against whom he was stopped in the 6th round of their bout for the Super Middle title in June 1995.

Former Linear Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson, who could clearly determine the outcome, gave the tie, 76-76.

Whatever happens in the future, the only thing that no one can take away from these legends of the ring are their respective historical exploits and they certainly entertained us with “the experience” for another night.

They both dislike the “draw” result. Will there be another night in the ring for the over 50s legends …? Mike Tyson got a taste of it!
