Il combattimento diventato noto come “Il massacro di San Valentino” quella notte ROBINSON vinse l’indiscusso titolo mondiale dei pesi medi al 13° round viaTKO.
ROBINSON ha surclassato LAMOTTA, scatenando negli ultimi tre round una serie di selvagge combinazioni, fermando finalmente LAMOTTA per la prima volta nella loro serie leggendaria di sei match, infliggendo a LAMOTTA la sua prima vera sconfitta. ROBINSON lo ha finito alle corde senza abbatterlo. Da qui l’espressione cadenzata di JAKE LAMOTTA: ” Non mi metterai mai al tappeto RAY…!”

Ho avuto il previlegio di conoscere JAKE LA MOTTA. Una leggenda, dei grandi sportivi italo/americani nato nel Bronx-New York nel 1921. Ispirato dal suo libro, il bellissimo film realizzato da Martin Scorsese, “TORO SCATENATO” che valse l’Oscar per l’interpretazione a Robert De Niro.
Nel match precedente LAMOTTA aveva perso per knockout vs BILLY FOX. LAMOTTA testimoniò, davanti al bureau investigazione che ha accettò la combine per ottenere i favori dalla Mafia italo-americana. All’epoca la Mafia era così tanto potente che teneva sotto scacco il mondo del pugilato, li minacciava di morte…
Subito appena conosciuto LAMOTTA disse anche a me la sua famosa battuta del dopo match: “Ho combattuto contro SUGAR RAY così spesso che mi è quasi venuto il diabete…”
JAKE è stato un autentico bullo che nella Nobile Arte è un complimento…!
Intendo “bullo” quella spavalda sicurezza che hanno gli uomini e le donne che si confrontano sul ring, la vita è parte della posta ma che nessuno vuol vedere in gioco. Ci sono le regole!

The fight would become known as the “Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre”. That night ROBINSON won the undisputed world middleweight title in the 13th round via TKO.
SUGAR RAY ROBINSON outclassed LAMOTTA, unleashing in the last three rounds a series of wild combinations, finally stopping LAMOTTA for the first time in their legendary six-fight series, inflicting LAMOTTA his first real defeat. ROBINSON finished it on the ropes without breaking him down. Hence the rhythmic expression of JAKE LAMOTTA: “You will never put me down RAY…!”

I had the privilege to know JAKE THE MOTTA. A legend of the great Italian/American sportsmen born in the Bronx-New York in 1921. Inspired by his book, the beautiful film made by Martin Scorsese, “Raging Bull” earned the Oscar for the interpretation of Robert De Niro.
