L’evento principale di questa sera a Las Vegas è tra l’ucraino SERHII BIHACHUK vs VERGIL ORTIZ, USA per il titolo dei Super Welter interim. Bel match!
Ma io vi scrivo di MARICELA CORNEJO 37 anni che ha preso al volo l’occasione di combattere CECILIA BRAEKHUS dopo che la slovena EMA KOZIN, non ha potuto raggiungerla in USA per problemi di ritardo del visto di accesso.
La vincitrice di questa sera se la vedrà con EMA KOZIN che detiene le due Cinture WBC e WBO dei Pesi Super Welter.
Se “The First Lady” del Pugilato ha diradato la sua presenza sul ring dopo anni intensi dal 2009 al 2020, nelle migliori arene del pianeta, dall’Europa agli USA conquistando tutte le Cinture, WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring Magazine, e chiudendo i 45 anni di Grande Boxe su HBO il 5 Maggio 2018, in una notte fantastica dove l’evento principale era GENNAGY GGG GOLOVKIN vs VANES MARTIROSYAN (che rimpiazzava all’ultimo momento SAUL “Canelo” ALVAREZ), il grande kazako al solito si è imposto in spettacolare KO.
Ma il match più intrigante divenne quello della campionessa norvegese ‘The First Lady’ CECILIA BREAKHUS che si confermava con netto punteggio vs KALI REIS. Da allora ha rallentato disputando un match all’anno.
In una notte senza nessuna poesia, e poche stelle nel cielo di Tulsa- USA- nel ferragosto 2020 con la pandemia che attanagliava il pianeta,The First Lady perde con un verdetto per Decisione Maggiore, dopo 11 anni di regno incontrastato nei Pesi Welter, cede all’americana JESSICA McCASKILL. E cede con la stessa anche nella rivincita del 2021. CECILIA BRAEKHUS sembrava così chiudere una carriera straordinaria. Unica.
Poi il Pugilato Donne nel 2021 è entrato nello streaming della nuova DAZN, e naturalmente chi meglio di The First Lady per i suoi risultati, per la sua abilità atletica, e per essere un faro per tutte le donne della boxe. CECILIA non mai stata divisiva, se non per qualcuna che meno talentuosa, ama più la rissa che la Grande Boxe.
CECILIA tenacia e classe sportiva e così umile. Risata contaggiosa, una vera bellezza caraibica, e con record di 40 match, 37 vinti, 9 via KO, 1 pari.
E dunque il mio pensiero, se possibile ancora più inciso all’insistere del grottesco clamore di queste Olimpiadi Paris 2024, che si concludono domani 11 agosto, così umiliante per la Boxe Dilettanti Femminile…
Questa notte sul ring del Mandalay Bay di Las Vegas, accade il match tra la più grande, meritevole professionista della Boxe Femminile, ‘The First Lady’ CECILIA BREAKHUS, oggi a 42 anni, con ancora l’ambizione di imporsi quale straordinaria, Numero Uno vs MARICELA CORNEJO americana di 37 anni, record di 19 match, 7 via KO, 6 persi.
‘The First Lady’ CECILIA BREAKHUS merita gran rispetto, perché se lei ha ricevuto tanto dalla Boxe per il suo talento e dalla sua maniaca dedizione, non ha esitato a ricambiare quando la Boxe Femminile ha avuto bisogno di lei. Questa notte ‘The First Lady’ CECILIA BREAKHUS s’imporrà per la conquista della Cintura WBC interim, al solito 10 round di 2m, e per chiudere la sua carriera nel prossimo match da protagonista per le Cinture WBC e WBO Pesi Super Welter detenute dalla slovena EMA KOZIN. Dite che sono già oltre questa notte…
So perdere quando c’è un match leale, mai quando c’è l’imbroglio.

FANTASTICA CECILIA BRAEKHUS vince stesso punteggio su tutti e tre i cartellini dei giudici 96-93. Nonostante l’imprevisto e la sostituzione dell’avversaria. Ottimi scambi sin dal primo roiund. Nel terzo round, CORNEJO ha efficacemente colpito con una combinazione sinistra-destra alla testa di CECILIA.
Verso la fine del quarto round, CORNEJO è andata al tappeto in Knock Down con un destro alla testa di BRAEKHUS.
BREAKHUS, più lenta con un jab penetrante e insistente al corpo e alla testa, CORNEJO costrtta a muoversi di continuo, ha tentato ganci alla testa di BRAEKHUS.
All’inizio del round 10°, BRAEKHUS. ha piazzato un destro all testa di CORNEJO. L’americana ha tenuto duro. Il confronto superato dalla norvegese…conferma il mio pronostico e l’ ottimo lavoro del Mo. Johnathon Banks all’angolo della norvegese.
Per ‘The First Lady’ questo è la 25° difesa del titolo WBC….
Fortunatamente queste due avversarie si conoscevano già dagli sparring in palestra e dunque erano preparate al cambio subito all’ultimo minuto. Due vere campionesse di sportività e di classe.

POSTFIGHT UPDATE Sunday 11 August 2024
FANTASTIC CECILIA BRAEKHUS wins with the same score on all three judges’ cards 96-93. Despite the unexpected and the substitution of her opponent. Excellent exchanges since the first round. In the third round, CORNEJO effectively hit with a left-right combination to CECILIA’s head.
Towards the end of the fourth round, CORNEJO went down in Knock Down with a right to the head of BRAEKHUS.
BREAKHUS, slower with a penetrating and insistent jab to the body and head, CORNEJO forced to move continuously, attempted hooks to the head of BRAEKHUS.
At the beginning of the 10th round, BRAEKHUS. landed a right to the head of CORNEJO. The American held firm. The fight won by CECILIA … confirms my prediction and the excellent work of Trainer Johnathon Banks in the Norwegian’s corner.
For ‘The First Lady’ this is the 25th defense of the WBC title….
Fortunately, these two opponents already knew each other from sparring in the gym and therefore were prepared for the last-minute change.
Two true Champions of sportsmanship and class.
