Oh great…The fog is back!
“… The summer of 1948 has passed, and at the end of November it is already dark at Campo Giuriati, Giancarlo’s commitment is continuous and assiduous, he runs for training with a balaclava and a blue suit. He runs, runs, together with his dog Milly. It’s cold. The warmth of his breath comes out like white smoke from a pipe.
The boy stops to spread his arms and inhale, and slowly throws out the air trapped in his lungs, then starts running again. Exercises repeated indefinitely, empty punches in front, on the side, bends, rotations of the torso again stretches of arms with closed fists. Shoulder and arm work, to hit an imaginary target. Rhythm, rhythm in his gestures, in the movements there is vigor and harmony marked.
Giancarlo resumes running, then slows down, and now jumps here, now there, again with imaginary blows to the body, uppercuts, and closed fists from bottom to top. Then he works with a jab, his left forearm bent almost to parry himself and at the same time defend and protect himself from the imaginary opponent. The sweaty face is serene, he likes it, and he enjoys nature, and the outdoors.
Milly leads a great life, eats well, sleeps and stretches, and is never tired of keeping up with Giancarlo.
Louis Armstrong’s somewhat sad trumpet sounds solitude in the green of the Milanese suburbs, Milly and Giancarlo’s dreams, the thick fog is melancholy, poignant, enveloping, protective wadding. We Milanese, when we don’t see it for a while, we miss it …”
Oh great…The fog is back!
…It is the dawn of a still damp spring in Val Ganna, Giancarlo rides along the paths of Lake Varese, rides with Mariuccia, the fog hides distant things, the distant past. Giancarlo is often absorbed when he finds himself in the world he loves most, nature: he finds himself thinking about too many friends who disappeared in the war. With everyone, he would have celebrated every victory, absolutely everyone, and with his Dad, then; how nice to have become like him, even more! He feels he has carried on the tradition he started and thanks him for that ancient craft that taught him to live, to be in the world with dignity and so much satisfaction. The more life passes, the more he misses the presence of that fighter who initiated him into the game of boxing.
Mariuccia is beautiful with scattered blond hair, green eyes with gold threads, red lips, and pants tucked into leather boots; she has a lot of fun: it was a great idea to accept the invitation to that ride and then stop for breakfast, laugh in a tavern that offers latte, baked desserts, freshly milked puddings, fresh eggs, and excellent salami quality.
The idea came to Guido, the son of Giovanni Borghi, a great lover of horse racing as well as boxing. He is a 15-year-old boy who is delighted to see Garbelli’s exploits in the ring. The great Garbelli, pride of Ignis-Boxing! Not all guys can propose a ride to a champion! The three rides wrapped in fog, and they eat it as if it were cotton candy; those who were not born in the fog cannot imagine the tales that it bases in their head, and how much nostalgia it knows how to engrave in the heart. Often it’s the smell that reminds us of people, the silent fog smells of chimney smoke, vibrates deeply, and sharpens the sense of mystery.
Reality is more beautiful than Giancarlo dreamed of it; now he rides with his Mariuccia at his side, and they exchange glances convinced that they can stop time and make it even more beautiful, forever!
These are historic years for all great Italian boxing. Giancarlo has crowned many dreams, maybe he is made of steel! … ”
